Clean-burning
Tips
1. Make sure firewood is clean, seasoned and dry before burning it.
Unseasoned wood smolders and creates additional emissions. Using wood
like Oak, Madrone, Hickory or Elm are preferred. They are known to produce
a longer-lasting fire and reduce creosote build-up. Fruit trees tend
to be a good clean hard wood to burn as well.
2. Never burn trash, magazines, newspapers, plastics or other materials
not designed to burn in fireplaces or stoves. Doing this is illegal
and hazardous. You can be reported!!!
3. Replace old solid fuel-burning equipment with cleaner EPA certified
or pellet-fueled devices. Or install natural gas or propane devices,
which are more efficient by design as well.
4. For ambience, an occasional fire log is reccomended other than burning
wood. Dura-flame products are not suggested, and are not clean burning!
They are made from parifin wax which is a petroleum based product. “Java”
logs are not made from this, and burn a lot more efficiently, as well
as provide an aromatic “coffee” smell as oposed to the Dura-flame
smell.
5. Please, have your chimney cleaned yearly, per each cord of wood burned.
Following these guidelines helps to prevent chimney fires, helps the
unit run efficiently, and to prevent a possible ban on woodburning in
our area.
